Seated Sekhmet with Lioness Head
Holding an ankh in her left hand, this statue bears an inscription of Amenhotep III.
Amenhotep III—father of Akhenaten—was particularly associated with the goddess Sekhmet. During his reign, he commissioned hundreds of her statues to be placed in the precinct of Mut’s temple (Isheru), south of the Great Temple of Amun at Karnak .
It is believed that there was one statue for every day of the year, each receiving daily offerings, as noted by J. Hill.
