The San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement team launched a four-day rescue operation after the apartment’s landlord called to report he hadn’t seen his tenant for weeks but suspected pets were still inside.

When the rescue officers entered the small two-bedroom unit, they were met with a shocking sight: rooms buried under layers of debris, trash, broken furniture, and household clutter. The air was thick, heavy, and suffocating — a haunting silence broken only by faint scratching sounds beneath the rubble.

Those sounds led them to discover the unimaginable — dogs had carved out tunnels beneath the mounds of waste, creating a network of narrow pathways that allowed them to move, hide, and cling to life.

“From Floor to Ceiling”: The Dogs Who Refused to Give Up

According to the San Diego Humane Society (SDHS), the apartment looked like a hoarding site that had been left untouched for weeks. Eleven small dogs — including Pomeranians and Chihuahuas — and two cats were found huddled together beneath furniture and inside the tunnels they had dug with sheer instinct.

It took four days of careful cleanup, heavy trash removal, and patient coaxing before rescuers could safely reach every animal. “It was heartbreaking to see the conditions,” said Jace Huggins, Chief of Humane Law Enforcement for SDHS. “But at the same time, it was incredible to witness their will to survive. They had literally dug their way through despair.”

Signs of Neglect — and a Chance for Healing

All thirteen animals were found suffering from neglect. They were covered in fleas, their nails were painfully overgrown, and several had irritated or infected skin. Despite everything, they greeted rescuers with cautious wagging tails and soft meows — a fragile spark of hope still alive in their eyes.

Now, they are safe at the San Diego Humane Society’s Oceanside Campus, where they are receiving medical treatment, food, and care. Staff members describe them as shy but slowly learning to trust again. “They’re finally getting a good night’s sleep, warm blankets, and gentle hands that won’t hurt them,” one volunteer said.

The Hidden Crisis of Pet Hoarding

Unfortunately, this heartbreaking case is far from unique. “Situations like this often happen when pet owners become overwhelmed or face personal crises,” Huggins explained. “If you or someone you know is struggling to care for their pets, please reach out for help before it’s too late.”

Pet hoarding — when individuals keep more animals than they can properly care for — is a growing concern in many communities. It often begins with good intentions but can quickly spiral into tragedy when living conditions deteriorate beyond control.

The rescued dogs and cats are currently under Emergency Boarding at the shelter. Once they have recovered, they will be available for adoption or fostering.
