Elsie’s Journey Through AFRID, Surgery, and Strength: A Family’s Story of Hope

Some journeys begin quietly, without warning. What starts as a routine hospital visit can suddenly unfold into days filled with fear, decisions, and courage no parent ever expects to face. For our family, that moment arrived ten days ago, when our sweet little girl, Elsie, was admitted to the hospital for what we believed would be a simple bowel cleanout. Instead, it became the beginning of one of the most emotional chapters of our lives.
When Concern Turned Into Urgency
Elsie was admitted not only for the bowel cleanout, but also because doctors were increasingly concerned about her nutrition and overall growth. Watching her tiny body struggle was heartbreaking. She looked so small, so fragile, and yet she carried herself with a quiet strength that amazed everyone around her.
After the cleanout, the medical team tried multiple approaches to help her gain weight. Nutritional strategies were adjusted, meals were encouraged, and every possible option was explored. Still, the progress we desperately hoped for did not come. Every meal became a reminder of how serious her struggle was. Every bite felt heavy with worry.
It became clear that Elsie’s difficulty with eating was not just a phase. Her body needed help — real, immediate help — and time was no longer on our side.

Doctors performed a scope to rule out any gastrointestinal or rectal abnormalities. While we were relieved that nothing structural was wrong, this also meant the problem ran deeper. There was no simple fix. No single procedure that would suddenly make eating easier for her.
Around this time, we received a diagnosis that helped explain much of what we had been seeing: AFRID — Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder. AFRID affects a child’s ability to eat enough to meet their nutritional needs. But AFRID alone was not what led to the next step. What truly raised alarm were Elsie’s lab results, her declining position on the growth chart, and her dangerously low muscle mass.
Her labs told a story that stopped us in our tracks. They showed that her body was essentially starving — not because of neglect, but because her intake simply wasn’t enough to sustain growth. Hearing this was devastating. No parent is ever prepared to hear that their child’s body is struggling just to survive.

Facing the Hardest Decision
As doctors explained the options, one possibility loomed heavily: a G-tube. The idea was terrifying. The thought of our tiny daughter undergoing surgery and relying on a feeding tube weighed heavily on our hearts.
But as difficult as the decision was, it became clear that the G-tube was not a failure. It was a tool. A bridge. A way to give Elsie’s body what it desperately needed while we continued to address AFRID and help her build a healthier relationship with food over time.
On Friday, Elsie went into surgery. Handing her over to the medical team was one of the hardest moments we’ve ever experienced. Fear, hope, and prayer tangled together as we waited.
Strength Beyond Her Years
Elsie handled the procedure like a true warrior. Even under anesthesia, she was surrounded by skilled, compassionate professionals who treated her with incredible care. When she came out of surgery, there it was — the G-tube — and yet she was still our girl. Still sweet. Still herself.
Connected to new tubes and monitors, she rested quietly, her spirit unchanged. In the days that followed, recovery became our main focus. Nutrition was carefully monitored. Her comfort was prioritized. Every small response from her body was watched closely.
And then came the small victories. A feeding that went well. A lab result that showed improvement. The tiniest signs of progress that felt monumental. Each one reminded us that this decision was giving her body a chance to heal.

The Role of an Incredible Medical Team
Throughout this journey, the hospital staff became more than caregivers — they became family. Nurses, doctors, dietitians, and specialists walked us through every step with patience and compassion. They answered our questions, calmed our fears, and ensured that Elsie was safe at every stage.
Preparing to leave the hospital was both exciting and nerve-wracking. We were eager to bring our girl home, but the responsibility felt enormous. Feeding schedules, medications, tube care, and constant monitoring now rested on our shoulders.
Thankfully, we did not leave unprepared. Education, resources, and support were given generously. We left with a plan — and with confidence that we could do this.
Home, Hope, and Healing
As we prepare to go home, our emotions are mixed. There is nervousness, yes — but there is also hope. The G-tube is not a limitation. It is a lifeline. It allows Elsie’s body to receive the nutrition it needs to grow stronger while we continue to work through AFRID with care, patience, and love.
Watching her adapt has been nothing short of inspiring. Even when things are uncomfortable or unfamiliar, she meets each moment with resilience. Her smiles, her curiosity, her little moments of play remind us that she is still very much a child — full of life and light.

Faith, Community, and Gratitude
We have not walked this road alone. Our family, friends, and wider community have surrounded us with prayers, messages, and encouragement. This village has lifted us on the days when exhaustion and fear felt overwhelming.
Our faith has been a steady anchor. Trusting in God’s grace has carried us through the uncertainty and continues to guide us as we step into this next chapter. We believe that Elsie’s life is held in loving hands far greater than our own.
Looking Forward
This journey is far from over. There will be setbacks. There will be learning curves. But there will also be growth, healing, and moments worth celebrating. Every ounce gained, every tolerated feeding, every positive lab result is a victory.
Elsie’s journey highlights the importance of early intervention, awareness, and compassionate care. It is a reminder that tools like a G-tube do not define a child’s limits — they expand their possibilities.
Our little girl is strong. Stronger than we ever imagined. Her courage teaches us daily what resilience truly looks like.
As we move forward, we do so with gratitude, faith, and hope. Hope that Elsie will continue to grow. Hope that her body will thrive. Hope that one day this chapter will be a testimony of strength, love, and perseverance.
Thank you to everyone who has prayed, supported, and walked alongside us. Please continue to keep Elsie in your thoughts. Her story is still being written — and it is one filled with hope.
