State police: One teen killed, another hurt in unusual upstate New York snowmobile crash

A teenage boy was killed and his 16-year-old friend was injured in a tragic snowmobile accident in upstate New York, state police reported Monday.

Steven Gregorie, 17, of Varysburg in Wyoming County, was riding a 2012 Ski-Doo snowmobile along a marked trail just before 12:15 p.m. Saturday when he lost control and crashed into a stack of logs, ejecting him from the vehicle, according to troopers.

Moments later, Gregorie’s friend — who was operating a 2015 Arctic Cat snowmobile — also struck the pile of logs. The impact launched both the rider and the machine into the air, and the snowmobile came down on top of Gregorie, police said.

State police rushed to the scene and transported Gregorie to Wyoming County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The 16-year-old rider sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

The fatal crash occurred nearly one year after a similar snowmobile accident in the region claimed the life of a 22-year-old man from Genesee County during a late-night ride with friends.
