Family of 9-year-old Aria Thorpe pays tribute to “beautiful little soul” after her killing

A 15-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with the murder of a nine-year-old girl who died after being stabbed in Weston-super-Mare, as her family paid tribute to what they described as a “beautiful little soul.”

Aria Thorpe died from a single stab wound at a home in the North Somerset town on Monday. Emergency services were called to Lime Close shortly before 6:10 p.m., where she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The teenage suspect, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, appeared at Bristol Crown Court on Friday via video link from youth detention. He spoke only to confirm his name and did not enter a plea. Judge Blair KC set a provisional trial date for June 15 next year, with the boy due to return to court on March 16.

The defendant was arrested shortly after the incident in the nearby area of Worle. His father was present in the public gallery during the court hearing.

In a statement released later, Aria’s maternal family described her as a joyful and loving child who adored singing, dancing and dressing up to look like her mother. They said her death had left them devastated and thanked the community for its messages of support during an unimaginable time.

Aria’s father, Tom Thorpe, also paid tribute, remembering her kindness, curiosity and playful spirit. He spoke of treasured memories, including family trips and simple weekend routines, saying she brought happiness to everyone around her.

“You will be greatly missed,” he said, calling his daughter a brave and innocent soul whose life was taken far too soon.
