Just days before celebrating their fourth anniversary, Thanh Thao’s world turned upside down. Her boyfriend,Tran Nguyen Quoc Huy, suddenly suffered a brain hemorrhage. For nearly four months, the 21-year-old has stayed by his side, doing everything she can in the hope that he will wake up.

Thao and Huy, both from An Giang, Vietnam, met in high school. Their love was simple and pure, supported wholeheartedly by family and friends. Yet one seemingly ordinary afternoon in June changed everything.

After finishing work, Huy messaged Thao as usual. But within ten minutes, he started showing strange symptoms. Realizing he might be having a stroke, Huy tried to search for first-aid instructions and asked his siblings to call an ambulance.

When Thao arrived at his home, she found Huy unconscious, convulsing, and vomiting. Shocked and terrified, she stayed calm enough to call emergency services. The hospital’s diagnosis left her speechless: Huy had suffered a brain hemorrhage.

The First Critical Hours

Recalling the moment she sat in the hospital corridor while Huy underwent surgery, Thao said,

“The doctor said if we had been just an hour late, he might not have survived. I cried so much. I felt helpless. I just feared losing Huy.”

Fortunately, Huy received prompt treatment, and the surgery was successful. Initially, he was treated in a hospital in Can Tho. Thao barely left his side, only returning home briefly to prepare essentials before traveling nearly a hundred kilometers back to the hospital.

Daily Vigil and Unseen Struggles

Despite being unconscious, Huy still receives Thao’s gentle whispers every day. She talks to him about her school life, her online business, and everyday little things. She always ends her stories with the same phrase:

“I believe you will wake up.”

With Huy’s family struggling financially, Thao has borrowed from friends and relatives to help cover medical costs. To further support them, she livestreams on social media whenever she has free time.

“I livestream to earn extra income for Huy’s care. I want to be financially stable so that when he wakes up, he won’t feel like a burden to anyone,” Thao explains.

Her days are exhausting: attending classes, working, livestreaming until 3 or 4 a.m., then rushing to the hospital to relieve Huy’s family. Yet even the smallest sign of movement—a twitch of a finger, a blink, a slight shift—gives her renewed hope.

Hope in the Midst of Hardship

There are days when Thao feels almost completely drained. But Huy’s subtle reactions reassure her that he can still hear and respond in his own way. These tiny responses fuel her unwavering belief that he will recover.

“The doctors can’t predict what will happen. All I can do is wait and hope. Every little movement reminds me that he’s still with us. That’s enough happiness for me,” Thao says.

Her devotion has deeply touched both families. Huy’s parents consider her like a daughter and constantly remind her to take care of herself.

“Our love is what keeps me standing. I never thought I could be this strong. This is the first time I’ve done so much for someone else,” Thao admits, her voice trembling.

Now, Huy is in the recovery phase. Every day, Thao and his family patiently help him with physical therapy exercises, hand and foot massages, and movements to prevent stiffness. Every small reaction from Huy is precious, a sign that motivates her to continue caring for him.

Even today, as she whispers beside his hospital bed, she softly says:

“Huy, wake up and hug me.”
