Britney Spears Sells Her Music Catalog for Hundreds of Millions of Dollars

Britney Spears has sold the rights to her iconic music catalog in a deal described as “historic,” reportedly worth hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars.

According to documents obtained by TMZ, the Grammy-winning singer transferred ownership of her catalog to Primary Wave, a private music publishing firm based in New York, on December 30. A source revealed that the deal is estimated to be on par with the roughly $200 million that Justin Bieber earned from selling his own catalog in 2022.

The source added that Spears, now 44, is pleased with the decision and celebrated the sale with her two sons, Sean Preston Federline (20) and Jayden James Federline (19). Representatives for the pop star have not yet commented publicly on the transaction.

The catalog includes many of Britney Spears’ biggest hits, notably songs from her 1999 debut album …Baby One More Time. Her fourth studio album, In the Zone, which features the smash hit Toxic, is also part of the agreement.

Following the release of “Toxic,” Spears won her first Grammy Award in 2005 for Best Dance Recording. The deal further covers a wide range of late-1990s and early-2000s classics, including “(You Drive Me) Crazy,” “Oops!… I Did It Again,” “Everytime,” “Piece of Me,” “Hold It Against Me,” and “Gimme More.”

Selling music catalogs has become increasingly common among major artists, and Britney Spears now joins the ranks of stars such as Stevie Nicks, Shakira, KISS, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Collins, and Bob Dylan.

The sale comes after Spears announced in January 2024 that she would “never return to the music industry.” She lived under a court-ordered conservatorship for 13 years, from 2008 to 2021, and has not performed live for several years. Her last performance took place in 2018 during her Piece of Me tour in Austin, Texas. Her most recent studio album, Glory, was released in 2016, while her latest musical collaboration was the single “Mind Your Business” in 2023.

Despite stepping away from the spotlight, Spears is reportedly still actively supporting her son Jayden’s pursuit of a music career. A source told Us Weekly that she has helped him connect with producers she previously worked with, ensuring he receives proper guidance and protection. The source also said Spears genuinely loves Jayden’s musical style and believes he brings a fresh sound to the table, adding that she is “incredibly proud” of his dedication and efforts.

Britney Spears shares her two sons with her ex-husband, former dancer Kevin Federline. She is currently single following her divorce from her third husband, actor Sam Asghari, in 2024.
