Iran launches more than 200 missiles in retaliation, striking multiple targets in Israel

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Iran fired hundreds of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) toward Israel, with several missiles penetrating Israel’s air-defense systems and causing damage in residential areas in the central part of the country.

Israeli media reported that Iran launched more than 200 missiles and UAVs at Israel on February 28, marking the largest retaliatory attack since Israel and the United States began a joint air campaign against Tehran earlier the same day. Air-raid sirens sounded repeatedly across central and northern Israel throughout February 28.

According to the IDF, in Iran’s first wave of retaliation, around 125 missiles were fired, of which only 35 penetrated Israeli airspace, while the remainder were intercepted outside the country. Israel’s national emergency service Magen David Adom (MDA) confirmed that a residential building in northern Israel was directly hit. In the city of Tirat Hacarmel, missile debris pierced the 17th floor of a 20-story building, lightly injuring one person.

By the afternoon, the IDF said Iran continued to launch additional missile salvos, with about 15 missiles targeting central and northern Israel.

The military urged residents to strictly follow safety instructions and remain close to shelters. Unconfirmed reports said another residential building in central Israel was hit, though no serious casualties were reported.

Over the course of the day, Israeli medical teams treated around 89 people, mostly for minor injuries caused by shrapnel or injuries sustained while rushing to shelters; six others were treated for anxiety.

In addition to missiles, several UAVs believed to have been launched from Iran also entered Israeli airspace, including areas near the Dead Sea.

The IDF said it had shot down more than 10 UAVs since the launch of Operation “Roaring Lion” on the morning of February 28, and released video footage showing air-defense systems intercepting a hostile drone.

By 6:30 p.m. the same day, a total of more than 200 missiles and UAVs were believed to have been launched toward Israel.

Meanwhile, Iranian media, citing sources in Tehran, claimed that Iran had deployed around 1,200 missiles and UAVs against targets across the Middle East since the morning.

The Israeli military has also been placed on high alert over the possibility that Hezbollah in Lebanon could enter the conflict, opening a new northern front. Earlier, a military source suggested that some missiles were launched from Lebanon, but the IDF denied the claim.

The **Jordan**ian military said it intercepted 49 UAVs and missiles launched from Iran toward Israel as they passed through Jordanian airspace.

Iran’s retaliatory attack came after U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that Washington had launched a military operation against the Tehran government. Trump said the objective was to “eliminate immediate threats” from Iran and reiterated that Tehran “must never be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.”
