📰 Putin Sends Condolences, Condemns Killing of Khamenei as a “Cynical Murder”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has publicly expressed his condolences to the President and people of Iran following the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the strikes carried out by the United States and Israel. In an official note to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Putin described the killing — which also reportedly claimed the lives of several members of Khamenei’s family — as a “cynical murder” that violated international law and norms of human morality. He urged Pezeshkian to convey his deepest sympathy and support to Khamenei’s family, the Iranian government, and the broader Iranian public.
Putin’s statement highlighted Khamenei’s role as a long-standing statesman who significantly contributed to strengthening Russian–Iranian ties, bringing the relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership before this crisis. He emphasized that in Russia, Khamenei would be remembered for his influence on bilateral cooperation and regional politics.
While expressing sorrow and condemning the act, the Kremlin’s reaction stopped short of threatening any direct military response, reflecting Russia’s broader diplomatic caution amid rapidly escalating tensions in the Middle East. The statement focused on condolences and criticism of the attack rather than specifying concrete political, military, or economic actions.
Russian officials and diplomats have also called for an immediate de-escalation of hostilities, with Moscow warning that assassinating the leader of a sovereign state could destabilize the region further and undermine international security norms. This stance aligns with Russia’s continued emphasis on preserving diplomatic channels even as it condemns the U.S.–Israeli operation.
Putin’s message comes amid a broader global reaction that includes strong criticism from other major powers like China, which similarly denounced the strikes and urged restraint, while Western nations have offered more mixed responses given the complex geopolitical fallout.
