U.S. Confirms Three Troops Killed as Iran Claims Strike on USS Abraham Lincoln

The U.S. military has confirmed that three American service members were killed by Iranian fire, while Iran has claimed it struck the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.

Late on March 1 (Vietnam time), U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that three U.S. troops were killed and five others seriously wounded during Operation Epic Fury against Iran. CENTCOM added that several additional personnel sustained minor injuries from shrapnel and blast effects and are receiving treatment before returning to duty.

CENTCOM said that, due to the fluid situation, the identities of the fallen service members will be released 24 hours after their families are notified, out of respect for next of kin. The command also stated it had sunk an Iranian Jamaran-class frigate at Chabahar Port on the Gulf of Oman.

“As President Donald Trump has said, members of Iran’s armed forces, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and the police must lay down their weapons and abandon ship immediately,” CENTCOM said in a post on X.

Meanwhile, Al Jazeera cited an IRGC statement claiming that four missiles struck the USS Abraham Lincoln while it was operating in the Gulf. According to Al Jazeera, the IRGC said: “The U.S. aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln was hit by four ballistic missiles. Land and sea will increasingly become the grave of invaders.”

Shortly afterward, a U.S. servicemember told the network that the USS Abraham Lincoln had not been hit and suffered no damage.

Al Jazeera’s report caused confusion. Earlier, Iran’s FARS News Agency and Tasnim News Agency had said only that the carrier was “attacked,” without specifying the outcome.
