A Virginia woman battling breast cancer is being hailed as a hero after she rushed into action and saved two young boys from a burning apartment — just moments after returning home from another round of chemotherapy treatment.
Jerkesha Petty had just arrived back at her home in Colonial Heights following what marked her 232nd day of chemotherapy, according to CBS affiliate WTVR. Exhausted from treatment, she went to lie down and soon fell asleep. But her rest was suddenly interrupted when the sound of a fire alarm jolted her awake.
When Petty looked outside to see what was happening, she immediately noticed something alarming at a nearby apartment.
“I looked across and I looked at the door, and it was smoke coming from out of the top of the door,” Petty told the outlet. Despite the physical toll of her ongoing cancer treatment, she didn’t hesitate. Acting purely on instinct, she ran toward the building. “I ran across the street. I don’t know how I got the strength,” she said.
When Petty reached the apartment, the situation was far worse than she had imagined. Through the doorway, she could see one of the young boys who lived there — and flames rapidly spreading inside the home. “I could see straight through the kitchen,” Petty recalled. “And it was just flames everywhere.” Realizing the children were in immediate danger, Petty sprang into action. Despite being weakened from months of chemotherapy, she managed to confront the fire and help get the two boys to safety before the situation could become even more catastrophic.
Details about exactly how the fire started have not been fully released, and it remains unclear where the boys’ parents or guardians were at the time of the incident. Officials from the Colonial Heights Fire Department have not yet provided additional comment regarding the rescue.
