Unexpected Guests: Mama Cat And Her Kittens Turn Owl Nest Into A Cozy Home

High in a quiet tree on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel, a wooden owl box sat waiting patiently for its next feathered resident. The property owners had installed the nesting box to provide a safe place for local owls to raise their young. Excited to witness nature up close, they even placed a small camera inside the box, hoping to capture the moment when an owl family would eventually move in. For weeks, the camera quietly recorded the empty wooden space. Then one day, when the owners checked the footage, they were stunned by what they saw.
Instead of a pair of owls preparing a nest, the camera revealed a completely unexpected visitor curled up inside the box — a mother cat surrounded by a tiny litter of newborn kittens. The cozy owl box had somehow become the perfect hidden nursery.
The mother cat had clearly chosen the box carefully. High above the ground and tucked safely among the branches, it offered protection from predators, wind, and rain — an ideal shelter for raising her vulnerable babies.
Concerned but determined to help, the property owners contacted Guernsey GSPCA animal rescue officer Anthony Vidamour, who quickly came to investigate the unusual situation.
Rather than immediately removing the animals, Vidamour first decided to observe the family for several days to make sure the kittens were healthy and receiving the vital nutrients they needed from their mother’s milk. During that time, he carefully monitored the nest, ensuring the tiny kittens were safe and that the mother cat felt secure enough to continue caring for them.
Once the kittens were strong enough to be safely moved, Vidamour climbed the tree and carefully reached the owl box. One by one, he gently removed the kittens and brought them down to solid ground. By that point, the kittens were around two weeks old and ready to begin receiving additional care.
“The kittens are now two weeks old and they are safe,” a rescue representative explained. “They are currently being hand-reared by the staff at our local veterinary clinic, where they are being bottle-fed kitten milk every two to three hours.”
The tiny kittens are now receiving round-the-clock care and growing stronger each day under the watchful eyes of veterinary staff.
Meanwhile, rescuers are still working to locate the mother cat, who managed to slip away into the surrounding trees during the rescue. Humane traps have been placed nearby, and the team remains hopeful that she will soon return and be safely captured.
If she is found, rescuers plan to reunite her with her kittens if possible — or ensure she receives proper care and a safe future. What began as a simple owl nesting project turned into an unexpected animal rescue story — proving that sometimes the most surprising places can become lifesaving shelters for animals in need. 🐱🌳🦉❤️
