Last week, Brazilian writer Aline Magnani decided to stay home from the office after feeling a bit under the weather. Instead of riding her motorcycle to work as she normally would, she chose to work remotely and spend a few quiet days recovering. What she didn’t realize at the time was that during her absence, someone had quietly decided to borrow her parked motorcycle — not for a ride, but for something much more important.
A few days later, on Monday morning, after finally feeling better, Magnani grabbed her bag and helmet and headed outside, ready to return to her normal routine. But the moment she approached her motorcycle, she immediately noticed something unusual.
Perched calmly near the handlebars was a small turtledove, watching her.
“I asked, ‘What are you doing here?’” Magnani later told The Dodo, still amused by the encounter.
Instead of flying away like most birds would when approached, the tiny visitor remained perfectly calm. As Magnani moved closer, the dove simply stood up and gently shifted to another spot on the motorcycle, almost as if she wanted to show her something.
“It was funny,” Magnani said. “When I spoke to her, the bird stood up and moved to another part of the motorcycle. I felt like she was trying to show me why she was there.” And that’s when Magnani realized the truth. The dove hadn’t just chosen her motorcycle as a resting place — she had built a nest there.
Tucked safely into the structure of the bike was a delicate little nest containing eggs that the mother bird was carefully protecting. During the days Magnani had stayed home sick, the quiet and undisturbed motorcycle had become the perfect place for the dove to start her family.
Suddenly, Magnani faced a choice: move the nest so she could use her motorcycle again, or allow the little bird to stay and finish what she had started. For Magnani, the decision was easy.
Instead of disturbing the nest, she chose to leave the motorcycle exactly where it was and allow the mother dove to continue caring for her eggs in peace. If everything goes well, it could take several weeks before the eggs hatch and the baby birds grow strong enough to leave the nest. Until then, Magnani has willingly rearranged her daily life around her unexpected guest.
“I feel that mom needs my help,” she explained. “I’m ordering food instead of going out, and planning my day according to my boyfriend’s availability. I’m doing what I can to help.” For now, the motorcycle remains parked — not because of mechanical issues, but because it has temporarily become something much more important: a safe home for a tiny growing family. And thanks to Magnani’s kindness and patience, the little turtledove has the peaceful space she needs to bring new life into the world. 🕊️🏍️🥚❤️
