On a brutally cold winter morning in Pennsylvania, a family stepped outside their home expecting an ordinary start to the day. Instead, they were met with a heartbreaking and unexpected sight. Beneath their truck, huddled tightly against the bitter wind and shivering in the snow, was a lone turkey desperately trying to survive the freezing temperatures.
The poor bird looked exhausted and frightened, his feathers dirty and matted from what must have been a terrifying night. According to Sarah Salluzzo, executive director and cofounder of Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, the family had often seen trucks carrying turkeys pass their home late at night. They believe the bird likely fell or escaped from one of those trucks the previous evening and spent the entire night hiding under their vehicle, enduring the merciless cold in silence.
Realizing the turkey needed professional care, the family contacted Lancaster Farm Sanctuary. The sanctuary immediately agreed to take him in, and soon the exhausted survivor was on his way to a new life. Once he arrived, the staff gave him a name worthy of a fresh start: William.
William’s condition told a painful story. He was freezing, filthy, and visibly injured from his ordeal. He had frostbite on his snood and appeared deeply anxious — almost as if the trauma he had experienced had completely shut him down emotionally. “He was very cold and kind of banged up,” Salluzzo explained. “He had frostbite on his snood. He was filthy dirty and extremely nervous. At first he seemed almost traumatized and withdrawn.”
Because William had been debeaked, a procedure commonly performed in industrial farming operations, the sanctuary staff strongly suspected he had escaped from a factory farm transport truck. For weeks after arriving, he remained cautious and frightened, unsure if he was truly safe.
But time, patience, and kindness slowly began to heal him. After spending about a month in quarantine recovering and adjusting to his surroundings, William began to change. The fearful, silent bird gradually transformed into a curious and social turkey who finally felt secure in his new world.
Today, William lives happily with two female turkeys at the sanctuary. He spends his days exploring grassy outdoor areas, wandering beneath trees, and enjoying the fresh air — experiences he likely never had before that cold winter night.
“He’s curious and talkative,” Salluzzo said with a smile. “He follows the two girl turkeys everywhere, just watching what they’re doing. It’s clear he admires them.” For the first time in his life, William knows what it means to live freely — surrounded by open skies, clean shelter, and compassionate people who care about him.
When that Pennsylvania family discovered a trembling turkey hiding under their truck, he was likely moments away from giving up hope. But because they chose kindness that morning, William’s story didn’t end in the snow.
