US Sinks Iranian Warship Near Sri Lanka; Tehran Warns of Serious Consequences

A major escalation unfolded after a U.S. submarine reportedly sank the Iranian warship IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean near the coast of Sri Lanka. The frigate had recently taken part in an international naval exercise hosted by India before the attack occurred in international waters.
According to reports, the vessel was struck by a Mark-48 torpedo, causing the ship to sink rapidly and resulting in heavy casualties among the crew. The incident is notable because it marks the first time since World War II that a U.S. submarine has sunk an enemy surface warship with a torpedo in combat.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi strongly condemned the strike, saying the ship had been a “guest of the Indian Navy” during recent exercises and warning that the United States would “bitterly regret” the precedent set by the attack. The sinking has sharply increased tensions across the region and raised fears of wider confrontation at sea.
