Born four months too early, but determined to survive

When twins Malachi and Mi’Lani entered the world at just 23 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy, their lives immediately became a fight for survival. Born nearly four months early, the fragile newborns were rushed straight to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where their mother Marie began the most difficult chapter of her life.

NEC can rapidly damage intestinal tissue, leading to infections and requiring emergency surgery. In Malachi’s case, doctors had to remove a portion of his damaged intestine to save his life.

The prognosis was uncertain. Doctors warned Marie that her son might face an extremely difficult recovery.

Yet despite the frightening diagnosis, Malachi continued to fight.

Mi’Lani’s heartbreaking battle

Malachi’s twin sister, Mi’Lani, was also facing an incredibly difficult journey.

Like her brother, she developed necrotizing enterocolitis, but the damage to her intestines was even more severe. Surgeons were forced to remove a large section of her bowel in order to stop the infection from spreading.

At one point, doctors told Marie that Mi’Lani might never be able to live independently at home. They suggested that she could require long-term care in a pediatric skilled nursing facility.

For any parent, hearing those words is devastating.

Yet Marie refused to give up hope.
