Five Days Old and Already Fighting a Heart Condition — Brianna’s Tiny Body Had Other Plans

The pregnancy had already been stressful, requiring growth scans every two weeks because Brianna was measuring smaller than expected. She arrived at exactly 37 weeks via emergency caesarean section after her heart rate began to drop. Immediately after birth she was taken to the neonatal unit due to her small size, low blood sugar and the need for additional support.

At first the family’s primary concern remained her weight gain, but at five days old a persistent heart murmur was detected. Further tests revealed a large ventricular septal defect. Mum Kirsten watched her tiny daughter struggle to grow while feeling her own heart break a little more with each passing day.

Yet Brianna continued to fight, and so did her entire family. The early scares that could have stolen their joy instead highlighted exactly how strong both mother and daughter truly are.

The stretch marks, worry lines and constant monitoring equipment became badges of honour earned through a love that simply refused to give up. Brianna’s story shows how even the smallest babies can possess extraordinary determination.
