This dog stumbled and fell into the canal

It happened in an instant.
One moment, the dog was wandering along the edge of a narrow canal. The ground was uneven, and the water below moved quietly but steadily. Weak and distracted, the dog took a wrong step.
And slipped.
With a sudden splash, it fell into the canal.
The water was cold, and the sides were steep. The dog struggled immediately, its paws scrambling against the slippery walls. It tried to climb out, but there was nothing to hold onto. Each attempt only drained more of its strength.
Panic set in.

Its movements became desperate—splashing, gasping, trying anything just to stay afloat. But the longer it struggled, the more exhausted it became. The current slowly pushed it along, away from where it had fallen.
People nearby began to notice.
At first, it was just a glance. Then concern grew. Someone shouted for help. A small crowd gathered, watching the helpless animal fight to survive.
But no one moved—until one person did.
