Mum Battled Diabetes… 20-Week Scan Found Baby’s Hidden Heart Defect

Natasha’s pregnancy was already high-risk because of gestational diabetes requiring insulin and extra monitoring. At the 20-week scan, the sonographer spotted a concerning discrepancy in Mercie’s heart and asked the couple to return for further checks. The rest of the pregnancy remained relatively stable until 33 weeks, when reduced fetal movements and high blood pressure forced an earlier caesarean at 36 weeks.

After birth, Mercie needed brief neonatal care for blood sugar issues, but overall she appeared strong at 7lb 4oz. Days later, Natasha noticed her daughter’s heart rate spiking alarmingly into the 170s. The diagnosis eventually confirmed a ventricular septal defect and atrial septal defect. That early detection during pregnancy proved life-changing.

“Those extra scans and early worries strengthened you, mama. You trusted your instincts and kept fighting for answers. Every difficult moment turned you into an even more powerful protector. You’re raising a beautiful heart warrior with so much love.”
