A Small Circle Begins

At first, they were all separate.

One stayed close to safety, clinging tightly to something familiar.
One stayed back, unsure of what to do.
One tried to help, but didn’t know how.

It looked like a normal moment — just a few baby macaques in the same space. But there was distance between them. Not physical distance.

Emotional distance.

The clingy one barely moved away from the adult macaque nearby.

The shy one avoided eye contact, keeping his body small and guarded.

The more confident one moved between them, unsure how to connect the two.

It could have stayed like that.

And sometimes, it does.

But something small happened.

A moment where no one moved away.

A pause where no one turned their back.

The confident macaque reached out first — gently, without pressure. Just enough to say, “I’m here.”

The shy one didn’t respond right away.

But he didn’t leave either.

And that mattered.

Then the clingy one came closer. Not confidently. Not all at once.

But enough.

Enough to begin closing the gap.

Slowly, the space between them faded.

They sat closer.

Not perfectly relaxed.

Not completely open.

But no longer alone.

A small circle formed.

No one forced it.

No one rushed it.

It just… happened.

And in that quiet moment, something new existed.

Not perfection.

Not certainty.

But connection.
