A Space Between Them

At the beginning, they weren’t together.
One stayed close to safety.
One stayed back.
One tried to help.
They were all in the same place — but emotionally, they were far apart.
The clingy one remained near the adult macaque, barely moving away.
The shy one kept his distance, unsure of what would happen if he came closer.
The more confident one moved between them, trying to understand both sides.
It could have stayed like that.
And sometimes, it does.
But something small happened.
A pause where no one moved away.
A moment where no one pulled back.
The confident macaque reached out first.
Not boldly.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
The shy one didn’t respond right away.
But he didn’t leave either.
And that mattered.
Then the clingy one shifted closer.
Not fully ready.
But willing.
And slowly, the space between them changed.
They sat closer.
Still cautious.
Still unsure.
But no longer separate.
A small connection formed.
Not perfect.
Not complete.
But real.
And sometimes, that’s all it takes.
