💙 “A 911 Call for a Teddy Bear”: The Kindness Behind Ryan Paul’s Story

Emergency dispatchers are trained to respond to all kinds of calls—some urgent, some confusing, and some that reveal just how differently the world can be seen through a child’s eyes.

For 12-year-old Ryan Paul, who is autistic, an emergency had a very specific meaning. He had been taught that when something is wrong or when help is needed, he should call 911. So when he discovered that his small teddy bear, Freddy, was missing, he did exactly what he had learned to do.

He picked up the phone and called emergency services.

On the call, Ryan calmly explained the situation in his own way. Freddy, his miniature teddy bear, had fallen and was nowhere to be found. To him, this wasn’t a small inconvenience—it was something that needed immediate help. He ended the call with a soft goodbye, a child’s honest understanding of urgency and care.

Ryan’s father overheard the conversation and quickly realized what had happened. He immediately called the dispatcher back to apologize and explain the situation, expecting the matter to end there.

However, department policy required that an officer still respond to the call.

That officer was Khari Manzini.

Manzini arrived at the home with something more than routine procedure—he came with understanding. Having received specialized autism response training, he approached the situation with patience and empathy rather than dismissal.

When Ryan’s father explained what had happened, Officer Manzini didn’t treat it as a trivial misunderstanding. Instead, he treated it with care, recognizing that to Ryan, this was very real.

Then came the moment that changed everything: the search for Freddy.

Together, they looked around the room and quickly found the small teddy bear right beside Ryan’s bed. It had simply fallen out of place—but for Ryan, it meant everything that it was found.

Cameras captured what happened next. As soon as Freddy was returned, Ryan hugged the officer tightly. The relief on his face was immediate and pure—no fear, no confusion anymore, just comfort restored.

Officer Manzini later reflected on the experience, saying he was glad to help and even happier to see Ryan smile again. For him, it wasn’t about the size of the situation—it was about meeting a child where he was and responding with care.

Ryan’s father also shared a lighthearted reaction afterward, joking that he was “offended” his son hadn’t asked him for help first.

But beneath the humor, the moment carried something deeper: understanding.

Because sometimes, what looks small to the world can mean everything to a child.

And sometimes, the right person showing up at the right moment makes all the difference—even if the emergency is a teddy bear named Freddy. 🧸💙
