JD Vance Reflects on Falling in Love With Wife Usha During Yale Law School Years
Before becoming Vice President of the United States, JD Vance was a first-year law student at Yale struggling with uncertainty, relationships, and the emotional effects of a difficult upbringing. According to excerpts from his upcoming memoir Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, one encounter during those years would ultimately reshape his understanding of love and partnership.
The woman at the center of that story is Usha Bala Chilukuri, whom Vance met while attending Yale Law School. In the memoir, scheduled for release on June 16, Vance recalls becoming immediately captivated by her after they were placed together in the same study group.
He describes one moment walking alone through New Haven on a cold, rainy evening when he called a close friend and confessed how strongly he felt about her.
“Dude, I think I’m obsessed with this chick in my small group. It’s unhealthy,” he reportedly said.
At the time, Vance was already involved in a long-distance relationship. However, he writes that his connection to Usha quickly overshadowed everything else in his life. In one passage, he describes the contrast in striking terms: “Everyone else was like a dim light bulb set against Usha’s radiance.”
According to the memoir excerpts, Vance told friends early in their relationship that he believed he would either marry Usha or remain single for life.
The future Vice President also speaks candidly about his own shortcomings during that period. He acknowledges that the trauma and instability of his childhood had affected his emotional development and ability to handle relationships in healthy ways.
“I didn’t just come on too strong. I was a lousy boyfriend in many ways,” he writes. “My traumatic childhood had made me resentful and left me with awful conflict management skills.”
Despite those challenges, he says Usha remained committed to him throughout their years together.
The couple graduated from Yale Law School in 2013 and married the following year in 2014. Since then, they have built a family together and currently have three children, with a fourth child reportedly on the way.
Usha Vance has maintained a relatively private public profile despite her husband’s political rise, though she has increasingly appeared alongside him during major public events and campaign appearances.
The memoir excerpts have drawn attention not only for their personal nature but also for the vulnerability Vance displays in discussing his emotional struggles and personal growth. Observers note that the reflections provide insight into the relationship that helped shape one of the country’s most prominent political figures.
Beyond politics, the story has resonated with readers as a reminder that personal transformation often begins through connection, patience, and the willingness of another person to stay during difficult seasons of life.
