In a landmark decision by the Criminal Court of Douai in northern France, a 60-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the repeated rape of his disabled son and the horrific sexual abuse of his Jack Russell terrier, Sultane.

The abuses took place between 2017 and 2023. The crimes came to light when the son, himself a victim of incestuous rape, filmed his father assaulting the dog and reported both horrors to the authorities. A veterinary examination confirmed that Sultane, who was only one year old when the abuse began, suffered severe and lasting physical and psychological trauma.

For the first time in a French criminal court, the animal was officially recognized as a full-fledged victim. Represented by attorney Me Graziella Dode and the animal protection organization LPA Nord de France (as civil party), Sultane was awarded €2,000 in compensation for her moral and physical suffering.

The perpetrator showed no genuine remorse and has been permanently banned from owning any animals.

Sultane was removed from the home in 2023, received care, and has since been adopted into a loving family where she is finally safe.

This ruling is being hailed as a major legal breakthrough. It sets an important precedent in recognizing animals as sentient beings capable of being direct victims of sexual violence, rather than mere property. It paves the way for stronger protections and greater accountability in cases of animal cruelty across France.

While the details are deeply disturbing, Sultane’s story ends with justice — and hope that other animal victims will receive the recognition they deserve.
