In the wild, few birds are as resourceful and determined as the Southern Ground Hornbill. These large, prehistoric-looking birds are known for tackling tough prey — but this scene is next-level impressive.

A Ground Hornbill was photographed wrestling with a seemingly impossible meal: a tortoise tucked safely inside its rock-hard shell. Using its powerful beak like a pair of specialized tools, the bird carefully worked at the shell’s openings, trying every angle to reach the soft body inside. It flipped, prodded, and pried with impressive patience and precision.

Ground hornbills are highly intelligent and social. In this case, the rest of the family stood nearby, calmly waiting for their share once the hard work paid off.

While they primarily hunt snakes, frogs, insects, and small mammals, tortoises are a prized (if challenging) meal. The thick shell provides excellent protection, but these clever birds have learned that persistence eventually wins. They’ll sometimes team up or spend long periods manipulating the tortoise until they can access the nutritious meal inside.

This behavior highlights just how adaptable and clever these impressive birds really are. With their striking red facial skin, deep booming calls, and cooperative family groups, Ground Hornbills are truly one of Africa’s most fascinating species.
