One Year Since Pope Leo XIV’s Inauguration: Catholics Worldwide Offer Prayers for the Holy Father

Vatican City – Today, May 20, 2026, marks one year since Pope Leo XIV officially inaugurated his pontificate with a solemn Mass in St. Peter’s Square on May 18, 2025. The milestone has prompted renewed calls for prayer and support for the first American-born pontiff as he continues to lead the global Catholic Church.

Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago on September 14, 1955, was elected on May 8, 2025, and formally began his ministry as the 267th Bishop of Rome during the inauguration ceremony. The event drew hundreds of thousands of faithful to Vatican City, along with world leaders and pilgrims, symbolizing a new chapter for the Church.

In his inaugural Mass, the Holy Father emphasized themes of unity, peace, and looking to Christ amid the challenges of the modern world. Over the past year, he has focused on pastoral care, dialogue, and addressing contemporary issues facing the faithful, including the role of technology, care for the poor, and global unity.

Catholics around the globe are invited to join in prayer for Pope Leo XIV, asking that he may continue to serve the Church with faithfulness, courage, wisdom, and humility. Many dioceses, parishes, and individuals have marked the anniversary with special Masses, rosaries, and moments of reflection.

As the successor of St. Peter, Pope Leo XIV carries the weight of guiding more than 1.4 billion Catholics. His Augustinian background and missionary experience continue to shape a pontificate rooted in community, truth-seeking, and service.
