Woman Loses 5.5 Liters of Blood During Emergency C-Section, Sees Bright White Light and Heaven While in Coma

London, May 23, 2026 – A British mother has shared her harrowing near-death experience after suffering massive blood loss during an emergency cesarean section, describing visions of a bright white light and the sensation of ascending to heaven.
Sarah Mills, 32, from London, underwent a dramatic childbirth on October 24, 2025, when her daughter Myla was born. What should have been a joyful moment quickly turned into a life-threatening crisis as Sarah lost a staggering 5.5 liters of blood, fell into a coma, and came close to death.
According to her account, the complications began shortly after Myla’s birth via emergency C-section. While doctors were closing the incision, Sarah felt intense heat, extreme exhaustion, and an overwhelming sense that something was seriously wrong.
“I kept telling the doctors that something wasn’t right. I saw a very bright white light and felt like I was floating up to heaven. I genuinely thought I had died,” Sarah recalled.
Sarah, who works as a school manager, had a prolonged and difficult labor. After several days of irregular contractions, she was admitted to the hospital. Despite attempting a natural birth, complications with the baby’s position led to an emergency cesarean. Myla was born healthy at 8:21 PM weighing 3.6 kg.
Immediately after delivery, Sarah began deteriorating rapidly. Doctors discovered a large blood clot in her cervix, which triggered severe postpartum hemorrhage. She required a full blood transfusion of seven units to stabilize her condition and was placed in a medically induced coma.
“I focused on the square tiles on the operating room ceiling. They kept getting bigger and then smaller. Then I felt like I was flying up to heaven. It was the most terrifying moment of my life,” she said.
Sarah miraculously woke up naturally around 7 AM the next day. She was reunited with her newborn daughter later that evening, an emotional moment that brought her to tears.
“When my mum brought Myla to me, I just cried. Everyone else had spent time with her, but I had only seen her briefly when she was born. I couldn’t believe I had almost lost the chance to hold her,” Sarah said.
Doctors later explained that the hemorrhage was likely caused by the baby’s hand and head position putting extreme pressure on the cervix during the complicated delivery.
Sarah and Myla were discharged from the hospital on October 29, 2025. Reflecting on the ordeal, Sarah believes medical staff should have paid closer attention to her repeated warnings that something was wrong.
“Women know their own bodies best, and we need to be listened to,” she emphasized. “I understand hospitals are busy and overstretched, but empathy and timely response are incredibly important.”
Sarah is now recovering at home with her husband Marius, 35, their newborn daughter Myla (now 7 months old), and their 10-year-old son Tyler.
