ITALIAN FATHER UNABLE TO TOUCH DAUGHTER’S COFFIN IN HEARTBREAKING MOMENT AFTER MALDIVES DIVING TRAGEDY

The grieving father of one of the victims of the devastating diving tragedy in the Maldives has spoken of his unimaginable pain, revealing he could not even bring himself to touch his loved one’s coffin when the bodies were repatriated to Italy.

The accident, which claimed the lives of five Italian divers in a remote underwater cave in Vaavu Atoll, has left families shattered as they prepare for farewell ceremonies while grappling with overwhelming grief and loss.

According to reports, the group — including university professor Monica Montefalcone, her 23-year-old daughter Giorgia Sommacal, researchers Muriel Oddenino and Federico Gualtieri, and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti — died while exploring a deep cave system around 50 meters underwater on May 14, 2026. The incident is now considered one of the deadliest diving accidents in Maldivian history.

One father, overwhelmed with sorrow, described the moment the coffins arrived back on Italian soil. “I couldn’t even touch her coffin,” he said, his words capturing the raw agony felt by all the families. The remains were flown to Milan’s Malpensa Airport and taken for autopsies as investigations continue into what went wrong during the high-risk cave dive.

While family and friends now prepare for private and public farewell ceremonies across Italy, a heavy cloud of grief hangs over those left behind. Many of the victims were accomplished marine researchers and experienced divers, making the tragedy even more difficult to comprehend.

The repatriation of the bodies has brought some closure, but the pain remains profound. Communities in Genoa and other parts of Italy are coming together to support the families, with funerals already taking place or scheduled in the coming days.

This heartbreaking accident has also raised fresh questions about safety protocols for advanced cave diving in popular tourist destinations like the Maldives. As the families mourn, the focus remains on honoring the lives lost — talented individuals who shared a deep passion for the ocean.

Our thoughts are with all the families affected by this tragedy as they navigate these incredibly difficult days.
