Tragic Update: Toy Executive Brian Spina Dies After Collapsing on Runyon Canyon Trail in Front of His Young Son

A heartbreaking medical emergency on one of Los Angeles’ most popular hiking trails has ended in tragedy. Brian Spina, a 40-year-old executive in the toy industry, collapsed while hiking with his young son and later died despite rapid rescue efforts.
The Incident at Runyon Canyon

On the morning of Sunday, May 24, 2026, Spina was hiking the popular Runyon Canyon trail in the Hollywood Hills with his son Charlie and a family friend. Around 9:15–9:17 a.m., he suddenly collapsed near the 1900 North Runyon Canyon Road area.
According to reports, Spina became unresponsive and stopped breathing. Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) crews responded quickly, providing emergency medical care on the difficult terrain. Due to the location’s inaccessibility, LAFD Air Operations performed a helicopter hoist rescue to airlift him to a hospital.
Tragically, Brian Spina was pronounced dead after suffering what is believed to be cardiac arrest. He passed away during the helicopter transport.
A Devoted Father and Husband
Brian Spina is survived by his wife Marissa and their two sons, James and Charlie. The family has set up a GoFundMe to honor his memory and support them during this devastating time.
Friends and family described Brian as a loving father who cherished spending active time outdoors with his children. The fact that the collapse happened directly in front of his young son has made the tragedy especially painful for those close to the family.
Runyon Canyon: Beautiful but Demanding
Runyon Canyon is one of LA’s most beloved hiking spots, offering stunning views of the Hollywood Sign and the city below. However, its steep trails and popularity can pose risks, especially for those with underlying health conditions during physical exertion.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of knowing one’s physical limits, staying hydrated, and considering personal health before tackling strenuous hikes — even on well-known trails.
Our thoughts go out to Marissa, James, Charlie, and all who knew and loved Brian Spina during this incredibly difficult time.
