San Diego Health Official Assmaa Elayyat Charged in Fatal Hit-and-Run That Killed Bride-to-Be Katie Osorio

The collage shows Assmaa Elayyat, 41, a high-ranking San Diego County health official (Deputy Director for Self-Sufficiency Services in the Health and Human Services Agency).
What Happened:
On Friday, May 22, 2026, 27-year-old Katie Osorio — a National City resident and bride-to-be who was set to marry in less than two months — was waiting at a bus stop on National Avenue near 35th Street in San Diego’s Southcrest neighborhood. She was heading to her second job.
According to police, a silver Infiniti G35 sedan veered off the road, mounted the sidewalk, slammed into the enclosed bus stop shelter, and struck Osorio. The driver fled the scene. Osorio was rushed to a hospital but died from her injuries.
The Suspect:
Investigators quickly located and arrested Elayyat nearby. She faces charges including:
- Vehicular manslaughter
- Felony hit-and-run
She was released on $50,000 bail and is scheduled for arraignment on Monday, June 1, 2026. It has not been publicly confirmed whether alcohol or drugs were involved.
The case has shocked the local community, especially given Elayyat’s professional role in public health and social services. Osorio’s family is mourning the loss of a young woman who was working hard and preparing for her wedding. A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family with funeral and related expenses.
This remains an active investigation and pending legal case.
