Washington Inmate Sentenced After Killing 70-Year-Old Cellmate Who Raped and Killed His Sister

Washington State – A 25-year-old inmate has been sentenced to nearly 25 additional years in prison for the killing of his 70-year-old cellmate, whom he discovered had previously raped and murdered his younger sister.
Shane Goldsby admitted to attacking Robert Munger inside their shared cell at a Washington state prison after learning of Munger’s horrific past crimes against his sister. Court records show Goldsby had repeatedly requested a cell transfer upon discovering the identity of his cellmate, but prison officials kept the two housed together.
According to prosecutors, Goldsby stomped on Munger, inflicting severe head injuries. Munger was rushed to a hospital but died several days later from his injuries.
Goldsby told the court that being forced to share a cell with the man who had raped and killed his sister drove him to commit the act. He expressed no remorse for the killing during his sentencing.
The case has drawn attention to prison housing policies and the challenges of managing inmates with complex personal histories and ongoing safety risks. Prison officials have not publicly commented on why Goldsby’s multiple requests for a cell transfer were denied.
Goldsby was already serving time when the incident occurred. The additional sentence brings further consequences for the deadly confrontation inside the prison walls.
This tragic case highlights the volatile environment within the prison system when victims and perpetrators of past crimes end up in close proximity.
