In a shocking case of betrayal and murder that has gripped true crime audiences, former crime scene technician Ashley McArthur was sentenced to life in prison for the 2017 killing of her best friend, Taylor Wright.

Taylor Wright, a 33-year-old former police officer, was in the middle of a difficult divorce and bitter custody battle in September 2017. Seeking to protect her finances during the legal proceedings, she withdrew $34,000 — nearly all of her savings — and entrusted it to her closest friend, Ashley McArthur, asking her to store it safely in a safe deposit box.

Instead of safeguarding the money, Ashley deposited it into her own bank account and spent it lavishly. She paid off her credit card debts, purchased a boat, and bought expensive gifts for a man with whom she was secretly having an affair.

When Taylor began urgently requesting her money back through repeated calls and texts, Ashley realized she could not repay it. On September 8, 2017, under the pretense of going to the bank to retrieve the cash, Ashley picked Taylor up. Instead, she drove her to a remote family-owned farm in Pensacola, Florida.

There, Ashley shot her best friend in the back of the head, killing her instantly. Leveraging her professional experience as a crime scene technician, she attempted to conceal the crime by burying Taylor’s body under potting soil and concrete. She then used Taylor’s phone to send fake text messages to her family, suggesting Taylor had run away to clear her head.

In 2019, Ashley McArthur was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
