A mother from Western Australia says she faced the most difficult decision of her life when she asked her 13-year-old son to swim through rough seas in a desperate attempt to save their stranded family.

Joanne Appelbee had been enjoying a day on the water with her son, Austin, and his younger siblings when changing weather conditions turned a family outing into a frightening survival situation.
