Florida Jail Inmates Conceive Child Without Ever Meeting Face-to-Face

An unusual story out of Miami-Dade County, Florida, has drawn national attention after two inmates reportedly conceived a child while housed in separate jail cells — despite never meeting in person.

Daisy Link, 29, and Joan Depaz, 23, were both incarcerated at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center while awaiting trial on unrelated felony charges. According to interviews later given by the pair, their relationship began through the jail’s air vent system.

The two inmates were housed on different floors and had never seen each other face-to-face. However, the connected ventilation system allowed them to communicate by knocking on the vents and speaking through them for hours each day.

“Being in isolation for so long, you begin spending hours talking to this person,” Link told local media outlet WSVN. “It almost feels like you’re in the same room.”

Over time, the conversations evolved into a relationship. The pair reportedly exchanged notes and photographs through the ventilation system before discussing the possibility of having a child together.

According to investigators, the inmates devised a method using household materials available inside the jail, including bedsheets, plastic wrap, and a medical applicator. Depaz later claimed he repeated the process multiple times over several weeks.

On Christmas Day 2023, Link informed her mother that she was pregnant — news her family initially struggled to believe.

In June 2024, Link gave birth to a healthy baby girl at Jackson Memorial Hospital. DNA testing later confirmed Depaz as the biological father.

The child is currently being raised by Depaz’s mother while both parents remain incarcerated.

The extraordinary case has sparked widespread reactions online, with many expressing disbelief over how the situation unfolded inside a correctional facility designed to keep inmates separated.
