Civil Rights Lawsuit Filed Over Religious Headwear During Arrest Processing

Two women, Salma Nasoordeen and Shenai Aini, have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the Orange County Sheriff’s Department in California.
The lawsuit claims their religious rights were violated when they were asked to remove their hijabs for booking photographs following their arrest during a pro-Palestinian protest at UC Irvine in 2024. They also allege the images were placed in a public database.

The Sheriff’s Department has denied the allegations, stating that standard booking procedures were followed and that any removals were conducted privately in the presence of female deputies.
A federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction limiting the release and viewing of the uncovered booking photos while the case continues in court.
The women are seeking policy changes, additional training on religious sensitivity, and other remedies.
This case has sparked important conversations about balancing public safety procedures with religious accommodations. We hope for a fair and transparent resolution that respects everyone’s rights under the law.
