Today, the tight-knit community of Moor Nook in Preston came together in quiet sorrow as hundreds of mourners lined the streets to honour the life of 12-year-old Junior Slater and say their final goodbye.

Just weeks earlier, on 26 May, Junior had been enjoying a warm afternoon swimming with friends by the River Ribble in Ribchester during a spell of record-breaking hot weather. Tragically, he got into difficulty in the water and never made it home. His body was recovered later that evening after an extensive search by emergency services. Lancashire Police confirmed his death was not being treated as suspicious.

The loss has left his family, classmates, friends, and neighbours devastated. Those who knew him remember Junior as a happy, cheeky boy with a bright smile and an even brighter spirit — often described as the “life and soul” of his family and someone whose warmth and kindness left a lasting impression.

In the days following the tragedy, the community rallied around his grieving loved ones. A GoFundMe appeal, set up by his sister to help give him the “beautiful send-off he deserves,” raised more than £15,000 in heartfelt donations from hundreds of supporters.

A Final Journey Through Moor Nook

On Thursday, 11 June, family and friends gathered at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for a service celebrating Junior’s life, before proceeding to Preston Cemetery for his burial. As planned, the funeral cortege took a final poignant route around Moor Nook — the community he loved so dearly — allowing residents to line the streets and pay their respects one last time.

The procession was marked by raw emotion, with hundreds standing in silence or offering quiet tributes as the hearse passed. Many struggled to hold back tears during the deeply moving moments along the route, a powerful testament to the impact this young boy had on everyone around him.

Moor Nook Youth Zone, which had previously supported young people through a balloon release and fundraising efforts, echoed the community’s grief, describing Junior as known and loved by so many.
