Search Ends for Bakersfield Man Who Fell into Kern River; Body Recovered Thursday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The search for a missing Bakersfield man who fell into the Kern River while trying to rescue his dog has ended tragically after his body was recovered Thursday.

Corey Vargas, 36, had taken his 9-year-old son fishing at Keyesville Beach near Lake Isabella on Saturday when the family dog ran off. As Vargas grabbed the leash, he lost his footing and fell into the river. His young son also fell in with him.

Thankfully, the boy was rescued safely, but Vargas was swept away by the strong current. The Kern County Sheriff’s Office and search teams had been looking for him since the weekend.

On Thursday, authorities confirmed they had recovered a body from the river, and Vargas’s family announced the devastating news that it was him.

The incident has left the family heartbroken. Friends and loved ones described Vargas as a devoted father who was simply enjoying a day outdoors with his son.

The Kern River is known for its powerful currents and dangerous conditions, especially in certain areas. Officials continue to urge caution and the importance of wearing life jackets when near or on the water.

Our deepest condolences go out to Corey Vargas’s family, friends, and especially his young son during this incredibly difficult time.

May he rest in peace.
