Inspiring Love Story: Turia Pitt Survives 65% Burns in Ultramarathon Tragedy, Supported by Devoted Partner Michael Hoskin

WESTERN AUSTRALIA — In 2011, 24-year-old Turia Pitt set out to run a grueling 100-kilometre ultramarathon in the remote Kimberley region. What began as an ambitious athletic challenge turned into a life-altering fight for survival when a fast-moving bushfire trapped her in its path.
Turia suffered catastrophic burns to 65% of her body. Airlifted to hospital in critical condition, she faced an unimaginable journey ahead — more than 200 surgeries, the loss of several fingers, and years of painful rehabilitation. Despite the overwhelming setbacks, Turia’s determination never wavered.
Standing by her side through every step of the long recovery was her then-boyfriend, Michael Hoskin, a police officer at the time. Michael remained a constant source of strength during her time in intensive care and throughout the difficult rehabilitation process.
When asked about his unwavering commitment, Michael famously said, “I love her soul, not her body.” His support helped Turia rebuild her life, and their bond only deepened through the hardship.
The couple married in 2015, marking a beautiful new chapter. Today, Turia and Michael are proud parents to two sons, Hakavai and Rahiti, and continue to inspire others with their story of resilience, love, and perseverance.
Turia has since become a motivational speaker, author, and advocate, turning her survival into a powerful message of hope. Her journey from the brink of death to building a loving family with Michael stands as a testament to the human spirit and the healing power of unwavering love.
A true story of courage, endurance, and the kind of partnership that overcomes even the greatest challenges.
