THE WAVE

THE WAVE (2015) – Official Trailer | Starring: Kristoffer Joner, Ane Dahl Torp | Genre: Disaster | Thriller | Survival
Set in the majestic yet treacherous fjords of Norway, The Wave plunges viewers into a heart-stopping disaster. When an unstable mountain collapses, triggering a massive tsunami, geologist Kristian (Kristoffer Joner) must race against time to save his family and warn the unsuspecting townspeople below. The film is an epic tale of survival, courage, and the power of family, packed with heart-pounding drama.

A Dramatic and Suspenseful Storyline
The film follows veteran geologist Kristian Eikjord on his last day at the early warning center in the picturesque town of Geiranger. He prepares to move with his family—his resourceful wife Idun (Ane Dahl Torp), teenage son Sondre (Jonas Hoff Oftebro), and young daughter Julia (Edith Haagenrud-Sande)—to a bigger city to start a new life.

However, fate has other plans. Kristian notices unusual geological readings from the Åkerneset mountain, a massif known to be unstable.[3] Despite the initial skepticism of his colleagues, his instincts tell him that disaster is about to strike. His worst nightmare comes true when the mountain collapses into the fjord, creating an 80-meter-high tsunami that crashes into Geiranger. Sirens sound, but people have just 10 minutes to run to safety.

In that chaotic moment, Kristian’s family is torn apart. He and his daughter Julia are caught in a line of cars trying to get to higher ground, while Idun and Sondre are at the hotel, right in the path of the destructive wave. From here, the film becomes a breathless struggle for survival, as Kristian must traverse the devastated town in search of his wife and son, not knowing if they are alive or have been swallowed by the wrath of nature.

An Epic of Humanity and Family
The Wave is more than just a disaster film; it is a deeply human story. Kristoffer Joner gives a brilliant performance as Kristian, not a superhero, but an ordinary man pushed to his limits, fighting desperately for the safety of his family. His fear, determination and courage are portrayed in a way that the audience can deeply relate to.

Ane Dahl Torp also shines as Idun, a strong and resilient woman. She not only tries to protect the guests at the hotel but also has to make life-or-death decisions to save her son in a life-or-death situation. The bond between family members is the thread that runs through the film, the motivation for them to overcome unimaginable situations.

“The bigger the wave… the stronger the impact.”
Stunning and Based on Reality
One of the greatest strengths of The Wave is its stunning visuals. Director Roar Uthaug successfully recreates the majesty of Norwegian nature, while also depicting the terrifying destructive power of a tsunami. The scenes of the giant wave crashing into a small town bring a sense of overwhelming and terrifying horror, making viewers hold their breath to watch.

What makes The Wave even scarier is that it is based on a real threat.[8] Åkerneset is actually unstable, and scientists believe that a landslide is inevitable in the future. The film is inspired by past landslide-induced tsunami disasters in Norway, such as the 1934 Tafjord disaster that claimed 40 lives. This realistic element gives the film a deep and disturbing layer of meaning.

Review
With a score of 4.7/5, The Wave has been hailed as “a thrilling, gripping disaster film that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.” Breaking away from the clichés of Hollywood disaster films, the film focuses on character and emotion, creating a story that is both tense and deeply moving. This is not just a battle against nature, but also a test of courage, ingenuity, and the bonds of family. The Wave is a powerful cinematic experience, reminding us of human fragility in the face of the mighty power of nature.
