Miracle Recovery: Mom Who Lost Arm in Great White Shark Attack Wakes from Coma to Say “I Love You”

SYDNEY, Australia — In an emotional update, Leah Stewart, the 35-year-old mother and teacher who survived a horrific great white shark attack at Coogee Beach, briefly woke from a medically induced coma and told her family the heartfelt words: “I love you.”
Stewart was attacked on June 13 while swimming inside the flags at the popular Sydney beach. The massive shark inflicted multiple severe bites to her arms and legs, leading to extreme blood loss. She underwent emergency surgeries, including the amputation of one arm, and was placed in an induced coma to aid her recovery.
After more than 11 days on life support in the ICU, doctors were able to extubate her and reduce sedation on Tuesday. This allowed Stewart a brief moment of awareness, during which she spoke her first words to her mother and partner, Fernando, who have remained by her side. Her brother, Joshua Stewart, shared the uplifting news on a GoFundMe page set up for her support, describing it as a “miracle moment.”
Family members noted that Leah also inquired about her young daughter during the brief awakening, highlighting her strength and love as a dedicated mom. She has since been sedated again as she continues to fight for recovery.
The community and supporters worldwide have rallied around Leah, with the GoFundMe raising significant funds to assist with her medical journey and family needs. Her story of survival against such a devastating attack continues to inspire many.
Leah remains in intensive care, with ongoing surgeries and rehabilitation ahead. Her family has expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support and prayers during this challenging time.
