Convicted Child Killer Shot Dead Less Than 24 Hours After Release from Brazilian Prison

SINOP, Brazil — A man convicted of murdering a 9-year-old boy was shot dead on the side of a road just hours after being released from prison following two decades behind bars.

João Ferreira da Silva, who had served 20 years of a 42-year sentence for the 2005 murder of young Bruno Aparecido dos Santos, was released from Ferrugem Penitentiary in December 2025 under a semi-open prison regime.

On his very first day of freedom, two masked individuals approached him outside a guesthouse and opened fire. Da Silva was found dead at the scene. Security cameras captured the assassination, but authorities have not yet announced any arrests or identified suspects.

The case has sent shockwaves through the local community. In October 2005, 9-year-old Bruno disappeared in Sinop. His body was discovered days later, leading to the arrest of local bricklayer João Ferreira da Silva, who confessed to the crime. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to 42 years in prison.

Da Silva’s early release had already stirred controversy among residents and the victim’s family. His murder so soon after leaving prison has fueled speculation about possible revenge motives, though police have not confirmed any connection.

Investigators are reviewing the security footage and working to identify the masked shooters. The case remains under active investigation.

The tragic death of Bruno Aparecido dos Santos in 2005 and the recent killing of his convicted murderer have once again thrust the small Brazilian city of Sinop into the national spotlight.
