Joy Reid Criticizes MAGA Vision, Claims It Seeks Return to Pre-Income Tax Era

MSNBC host Joy Reid made comments criticizing what she described as the economic vision of MAGA supporters, arguing it represents a desire to return to America before the 20th century.
In the statement, Reid said:
“If you go back before the 20th century, there were no income taxes. There were no regulations on business. You could earn as much money as you want, leave 100% of it to your children with no taxes. That’s the world they want back.”
The remarks highlight a common point of debate in American politics regarding taxation, government regulation, and economic policy. The modern U.S. federal income tax was introduced in 1913 with the 16th Amendment. Prior to that, the federal government relied primarily on tariffs, excise taxes, and other revenue sources.
Critics of high taxation and heavy regulation often point to the rapid economic growth and innovation during the late 19th century (the Gilded Age), while opponents argue that era also featured extreme inequality, monopolies, child labor, and lack of worker protections — issues that led to progressive reforms in the early 20th century.
Reid’s comments reflect ongoing partisan disagreements about the proper size and role of government in the economy. Supporters of lower taxes and deregulation typically argue these policies promote freedom, growth, and opportunity, while critics contend they lead to instability and unfairness without sufficient oversight.
The clip has circulated widely on social media, sparking discussion about historical economic conditions and contemporary policy preferences.
