Indiana Father Sentenced to 23 Years After Unsecured Gun Kills 4-Year-Old Son Who Thought It Was a ‘Flashlight’

An Indiana father has been sentenced to 23 years in prison after his unsecured handgun led to the tragic death of his 4-year-old son, who reportedly mistook the weapon for a “flashlight.”

Nathan Stanley left multiple firearms unsecured on a bedside table, authorities said. The young boy was playing with items on the table when he picked up the gun and it discharged, fatally striking him in the torso. His last words, according to investigators, were “Oh, a flashlight.”

The child’s mother, Mikayla Stanley, is set to stand trial on a neglect charge in connection with the incident. Prosecutors emphasized the preventable nature of the tragedy, noting the dangers of unsecured firearms in homes with young children.

During sentencing, the court heard emotional testimony about the devastating impact on the family. Stanley expressed remorse, but the judge highlighted the repeated failure to secure weapons as a key factor in the decision.

Gun safety advocates have used the case to renew calls for responsible storage practices. “This heartbreaking loss underscores the critical importance of keeping firearms locked and unloaded when children are present,” one advocate stated.

The incident has served as a grim reminder of the risks associated with unsecured guns in households. Authorities continue to urge parents to prioritize safe storage to prevent similar tragedies.
