Kentucky Teen Who Recorded Himself Beating Grandmother to Death with Tumbler Sentenced to Life in Prison

A Kentucky teenager who filmed himself brutally beating his 74-year-old grandmother to death inside her Erlanger home has been sentenced to life in prison. Wyatt Testerman, 19, was convicted in the killing of Cheri Oliver, a case that shocked the community due to its calculated violence and the fact that the attack was captured on video.

According to prosecutors, Testerman deliberately set up his phone to record the assault on June 30, 2025 (or around that timeframe based on reports). He closed the blinds, cleared space in the living room, and then knocked his grandmother to the floor. He punched her more than 40 times, stomped on her repeatedly, and struck her multiple times with a metal tumbler, causing fatal blunt-force trauma.

Court records indicate he paused during the attack to check her pulse and made a disturbing comment before continuing the assault. A family member who tried to intervene was unable to stop him.

The defense argued that Testerman was experiencing a drug-induced psychotic episode from prolonged LSD use. However, prosecutors emphasized evidence of planning and intent, and Kentucky law does not recognize voluntary drug intoxication as grounds for an insanity defense.

Prior to sentencing, Testerman addressed the court, apologizing to his family and expressing remorse. The judge, citing the severity and premeditated nature of the crime, imposed a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 20 years.

The case has highlighted issues of youth violence, substance abuse, and the limits of mental health defenses in violent crimes. Oliver was remembered as a beloved family member, and the video evidence played a central role in securing the conviction.
