New details are emerging following the death of a student-athlete who was found dead near a remote Mississippi island.
Nolan Xavier Wells, 18, was last seen on Horn Island, located 10 miles off the coast of Mississippi, on Saturday, July 4, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.
Officials said a body found in the water on the northwest end of Horn Island on the morning of Monday, July 6, was believed to be Wells.
Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd tells PEOPLE he was able to positively identify Wells “through the Medical Examiner’s Office with dental records.”
Lynd would not speculate about a potential cause of death. He notes it could be weeks until the full medical examiner’s report is complete.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said investigators do not suspect foul play in connection with Wells’ death, according to ABC News. Authorities suspect he drowned.
“There’s no information that we have right now that would lead us to believe that a crime has occurred,” Ledbetter said.
Wells’ family has retained renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump in the wake of Wells’ death, Crump’s law firm said in a news release.

Wells’ family is now “calling for a thorough and transparent investigation into how Nolan died,” the release read.
“Nolan Wells was a beloved son, teammate and friend who went out to celebrate the Fourth of July and never came home,” Crump said in a statement. “His family deserves answers. They deserve the truth.”
