Family of Teen Tourist Romanch Mahajan Killed in NYC Horse Carriage Horror Urges City Council to Ban Industry Ahead of Landmark Hearing

New York City — The grieving family of 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan, a tourist killed in a tragic horse-drawn carriage accident in Central Park, is calling on the New York City Council to “do the right thing” and support a ban on the industry.

Mahajan was thrown from the carriage when the horse reportedly became spooked and bolted. His death has intensified calls for reform, with the family naming proposed legislation “Romanch’s Law” to phase out horse-drawn carriages by June 2028. NYC Council Speaker Julie Menin recently endorsed the bill, bringing it closer to the votes needed for passage. A key hearing is scheduled soon.

Supporters argue the incidents highlight safety risks to both tourists and animals. The family continues to push for accountability and change in memory of their son.
