Community Gathers to Celebrate Life of Nolan Wells, 18, at Ocean Springs Funeral Following Tragic Death on Horn Island

Family, friends, teammates, and community members filled Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, on July 20, 2026, to honor the life of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, whose bright spirit and promising future were cut short after he went missing during a Fourth of July outing on Horn Island.
Wells, a recent Ocean Springs High School graduate and wide receiver for Southwest Mississippi Community College, was remembered as a kind-hearted, humble young man who excelled in multiple sports (football, basketball, and baseball), participated in his school’s media program, and brought joy to those around him with his smile, compassion, and ability to uplift others.
His parents, Christine Wonsley and Elmore Wonsley, shared heartfelt tributes during the service. Christine described her son as a “special soul” and “bright light,” while Elmore highlighted his athletic achievements and role as a big brother. Rev. Al Sharpton officiated the funeral, emphasizing unity across races and ages in attendance, and civil rights attorney Ben Crump called for justice and answers regarding the circumstances of Wells’ death. Filmmaker Tyler Perry covered the funeral costs, and other public figures, including Colin Kaepernick, have supported the family.

Wells disappeared on July 4, 2026, while celebrating Independence Day on Horn Island—a barrier island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast—with a group of friends. He was last seen around 3 p.m. near the northwest tip of the island. His friends returned to the mainland without him, and he was reported missing that night. A multi-agency search ensued, and his body was recovered from the water near the shoreline on July 6. The Jackson County Coroner confirmed his identity, with no immediate signs of physical trauma reported at the time. The investigation remains ongoing, with the family pursuing an independent autopsy.
A celebration of life followed the service at the Jackson County Fairgrounds. A GoFundMe established for funeral and family support has drawn widespread contributions, reflecting the deep impact Wells had on his community.
Though his life was tragically brief, Nolan Wells’ legacy of kindness, friendship, and perseverance continues to inspire those who knew him and many who learned of his story nationwide. As his family and loved ones have expressed, his memory will live on through the stories shared and the call to cherish every moment.
