Nearly 19 years after three-year-old Madeleine McCann vanished from a holiday apartment in Portugal, investigators have received a significant new package of material focused on the prime suspect in the case.

German authorities have handed over a detailed dossier on Christian Brueckner to officers from the UK’s Metropolitan Police, who continue to run Operation Grange. Sources describe the files as containing key evidence relating to the 49-year-old, including material previously highlighted in investigative reporting.

The transfer marks a noticeable shift in the level of cooperation and interest from British investigators. While plans to seek Brueckner’s extradition to the UK remain distant, the move signals that claims surrounding the German national are being treated with greater seriousness.

What the Dossier Contains
According to sources, the material includes photographs and information that German investigators consider relevant to their understanding of the case. One image shows Brueckner, now sporting a beard and moustache, cycling near an Aldi supermarket and garden centre in Kiel, Germany, where he lives in a modified shipping container.

German police have been ordered to maintain close monitoring of him following earlier criticism that they temporarily lost track of him during 24-hour surveillance.

German prosecutors have long maintained they possess physical evidence linking Brueckner to Madeleine’s disappearance and that they believe she is dead, though no forensic proof has been made public. A hard drive containing image files from Portugal around the time of the disappearance is said to form a central part of their assessment.

Current Status of the Investigation
Operation Grange officially remains a missing persons inquiry because Madeleine has never been found. For extradition proceedings to advance, the case would need to be elevated to a murder investigation.

Brueckner, who has consistently denied any involvement, served a seven-year sentence in Germany for the 2005 rape of an American woman in the same Portuguese resort area where Madeleine disappeared. He was released in September 2025. He continues to face legal issues, including a postponed appeal hearing over a short sentence for verbally assaulting a prison officer, and ongoing efforts related to other allegations of which he was previously cleared.

Last year the Metropolitan Police increased activity on the case, including travel to Portugal to re-interview witnesses. A Met spokesperson confirmed the investigation has remained active since 2011 and that officers continue close discussions with colleagues in Germany and Portugal while pursuing any viable lines of inquiry.

Madeleine McCann disappeared from the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz on 3 May 2007 while her parents were dining nearby. She would now be 23 years old. Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have never stopped seeking answers.

The latest exchange of files between German and British investigators is the clearest recent indication that the long-running search for the truth has not stalled.
