What seemed like an ordinary cold quickly turned into every parent’s worst nightmare.

Within just a few days, one-year-old Ryan’s health changed dramatically. A severe Strep A infection triggered septic shock, and his heart suddenly stopped. Medical teams worked tirelessly for 10 minutes before they were able to restore his heartbeat.

The infection caused catastrophic damage to his limbs. To give him the strongest chance of survival, doctors had to remove both of his legs below the knees, along with parts of his fingers and fingertips.

Ryan’s parents were told he might not make it. Yet the little boy fought on. After months of intensive care, surgeries, and recovery, he has continued to progress — later learning to move and play with the help of prosthetic legs.

His story has become a powerful reminder of how quickly a common infection can become life-threatening, and of the strength of families who face the unimaginable while advocating for greater awareness of sepsis.
