More than 19 years after three-year-old Madeleine McCann vanished from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, one of the world’s most closely followed missing-person cases remains unresolved. Now, a new development involving the German man long considered the main suspect has once again placed the case under an international spotlight.

Christian Brückner, 49, is currently the subject of a separate police investigation in Germany following an incident involving officers in Kiel. German police confirmed in July 2026 that investigators were examining allegations of assault or resistance against law-enforcement officers after an encounter on June 6 left one officer injured.

The new investigation is not a new charge connected directly to Madeleine’s disappearance, but it comes at a time when authorities continue to closely monitor Brückner following his release from prison in September 2025. He had completed a sentence for an unrelated crime committed in Portugal.

In June 2026, Germany’s Higher Regional Court in Schleswig allowed police surveillance of Brückner to continue after authorities challenged an earlier decision that would have ended the observation measures. German media reported that police had been monitoring him around the clock because authorities considered him at significant risk of committing further offenses.

Meanwhile, British investigators have not closed their own investigation.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Operation Grange, the British investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance, remains active. Scotland Yard continues working with authorities in Portugal and Germany and says the investigation is still receiving funding from the UK Home Office.

British media also reported in June that Operation Grange investigators had received additional files from German authorities concerning Brückner. While those reports described the material as potentially significant, police have not publicly announced that the information provides enough evidence to charge him in Madeleine’s case.

That distinction remains crucial.

Brückner was identified by German prosecutors as a major suspect in 2020. He lived in Portugal around the time Madeleine disappeared and was formally made a suspect by Portuguese authorities in 2022. However, he has never been charged in connection with Madeleine McCann’s disappearance and has denied involvement.

Madeleine vanished on May 3, 2007, while her family was staying at a holiday resort in Praia da Luz. Despite enormous international searches, police investigations, reported sightings and countless theories, no definitive public evidence has established exactly what happened to her.

Today, the central mystery remains unchanged: Where is Madeleine McCann, and will investigators ever obtain the evidence needed to finally explain what happened that night?

For Kate and Gerry McCann, and for millions who have followed the case for nearly two decades, the wait for a definitive answer continues.
